In the island of Socotra, located off the coast of Yemen, an unusual flora growing on the island is the dragon’s blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari). This tree features an upturned, densely packed crown having the shape of an uprightly held umbrella. The tree gains its name because of the dark red resin, which flows from its trunk when cut and resembles blood.
According to folklore, the first dragon’s blood tree grew in the spot where two brothers, Darsa and Samha, fought each other to the death. In Arabic, the tree is known as dam al akhawain, meaning “the blood of the two brothers”. Another story holds that the trees sprouted from the drops of blood shed by a dragon while it fought an elephant.
Most trees draw water from the soil and up their roots to the leaves; dragon’s blood trees can also do the reverse, taking water from the air and passing it into the soil. The unique shape of the dragon’s blood tree is an adaptation to life in its arid environment, allowing the trees to capture moisture from the fog and clouds, a process called horizontal precipitation capture.
